We have to admit something.
Last year…
When we first thought of Birchberry.
We decided to keep this brand 100% positive.
Because baking should make you feel good.
But we got a surprise email a few weeks ago.
It was from Katie.
She said she’s the Assistant Editor for VIE.
A national luxury lifestyle magazine.
They were featuring six U.S. bakers in their November issue…
And they wanted to include Birchberry.
It would be us, and a few other bakers like…
Butternut Bakery, The Vanilla Bean Blog, and more.
Telling our stories…
And sharing a holiday recipe.
We loved the idea.
But had to make a decision.
Do we share our full story?
Or keep things light and positive?
You see…
Back in “Chapter 1”...
We shared Who we are.
And What Birchberry is.
But we haven’t told you Why.
Why we really want to help home bakers.
We wondered…
Is our story a little too intense?
Or could it help someone else—
Someone who’s gone through something similar.
So we decided to tell it.
The truth is...
For most of my life, I baked just a few times a year.
But between 2018 and 2020…
When we were in our twenties…
Eric and I both lost our dads.
Back-to-back.
Within a year and a half of each other.
My dad was my best friend.
And biggest cheerleader.
And the same was true for Eric.
While I was with dad in the hospital…
The pandemic hit.
I lost my job on the spot.
Then I lost my dad.
And three months later, our dog.
Everything felt uncertain and closed-off.
So I started baking nearly every day.
To ground myself.
And reconnect.
It became my therapy.
And through that…
We realized something important.
Without those trials…
I wouldn’t have discovered how baking can heal.
We wouldn’t have started Birchberry.
And we wouldn’t be here with you.
We believe everything happens for a reason.
Even if it’s hard to see it in the moment.
But there’s more to every story.
